  • Knowing me, knowing you

This Spring I was invited to join AMOA-Arthouse's Advanced Young Artist program. This program pairs exemplary high school art students, who have limited access to visual art resources, with working artists from the Austin area. Each Saturday, my high school mentee Rocío and I hang out researching artists or checking out art around town talking about our observations. Mostly, and most rewardingly, we just make things together in my studio listening to loud music and daydreaming about plants and bright colors. Being a mentor can be an interesting and scary experience that is unlike the typical teacher/student relationship with its own set of dynamics. Having had my own mentor when I was a wee artist, I can honestly say the experience left an indelible mark on my upbringing and shaped the person I am today. Challenging at times, I am eager to see how my time with Rocío shapes her and frankly, influences me. Excitedly our time together culminates in an exhibition with the seven-month collaboration at its core running from July 14-September 1. If you are in the area, check it out!
